Ascom is the successor to the Swiss telecommunications companies Autophon, Hasler and Zellweger and was formed in 1987 through a merger.

In 1982, the Solothurn-based company Autophon acquired a stake in Apparatefabrik Gfeller AG in Flamatt, and in 1984 Autophon merged with Gfeller AG to form Autophon Holding AG.

In 1987, the merger of Autophon Holding AG (with 6,000 employees, CHF 800 million turnover in 1986), Hasler Holding AG (6,800 employees, CHF 880 million turnover in 1986) and Zellweger Telecommunications AG (850 employees, CHF 195 million turnover in 1986) created ascom, which is still active in telecommunications technology today.
