E-663: AEG / Telefunken E 1800

E-663, Telefunken E 1800; developed and produced by AEG - Telefunken AG, Ulm.

For use in the signal intelligence units, the formerly used receivers E-658 (R & S EK 070) were gradually replaced by receivers from the E 1800 family of AEG-Telefunken after 1987.

Different receivers of the E-1800 family carried the same E-xxx designation E-663:

E 1800 A

Operation (E1800 A)

The E 1800 A receiver comes in a 19 inch rack; only the A version is the enhanced version with digital signal processing (DSP) in the second intermediate frequency.

On the top of the front panel, you will find a row of LED displays.
Below these are the buttons to control the memory and scan functions and the numeric keypad for direct frequency entry. The operation frequency can be entered directly, a press on the EXE button tunes the receiver to the desired frequency.

Below the digital frequency display (which indicates the operation frequency with an accuracy of 1 Hz), the buttons to store and recall memories and the tuning knob are located. To the right of it, the operation mode is displayed alphanumerically, the IF filter bandwidth in kHz; the parameters are selected with rotary controls, pushbuttons set the controls to select DEMOD (reception mode) or BANDW (Bandwidth).

LED bar graphs in the upper right corner display the signal form, the carrier is marked in red; the right LED bar displays the RF or LF signal strength.

Underneath, at the right of the main tuning knob, the monitor speaker is located, followed by the volume control (AF Level), followed by two multi - function knobs and the monitor speaker switch. The buttons above the left rotary control activate its function as BFO or RF Gain, the right rotary control not only selects the operation mode (DEMOD) and bandwidth (BANDW) as described, but also the notch filter (NOTCH) and the passband tuning (PASSB), which can be used to shift the IF filter transmission curve.

The set is completely solid state.

Development

The Telefunken E 1800 was introduced in 1985 and was soon considered as one of the worlds best receivers. The original receiver was followed by the variant E 1800/3 with an improved RF frontend and by the variant E 1800 / A with digital signal processing in the second intermediate frequency in 1994, the digital IF filters replaced the 200 kHz mechanical IF filters of the original E 1800.

The Telefunken E 800A is a stripped down version of the E 1800 which came with one main PCB and was not of the more expensive modular construction.

The receivers exist with different company brand names on the front panel; the company had different owners in the last twenty years, so Telefunken, AEG - Telefunken, DASA, EADS all appeared on the front panel.

Field use

The Telefunken receivers of the E 1800 family were used by EKF Profi (signal intelligence). They gradually replaced the E-658 (Rohde & Schwarz EK 070) after 1987/1992 and were liquidated after their replacement by the software-based receivers E 2000 (HFE 98) after 2010.
