R-905

Microwave relay station R-905; manufactured by Alcatel Schweiz AG / Thales Zürich.

As early as the 1970s, a new concept for a small microwave radio as a replacement for the R-902 station was considered, but the project was postponed after the existing station could be digitised without great effort.

It was not until 1996 that the project for a 15 GHz small microwave radio station was reactivated and the contract was awarded to STR / Alcatel following a new invitation to tender; Thomson-CSF continued the project from 1998.

Operation

The R-905 digital microwave relay station is based on the „Melodie“ family of civilian microwave relay systems from Alcatel, which has been retrofitted to meet the requirements of military field use.

The system operates in the 14.6 - 15.2 GHz frequency range and can transmit a data stream of 2 or 8 MBit/sec., with an antenna diameter of 60 cm, distances of up to 35 km can be covered.

Together with the development of R-905 and R-916, Omnisec also developed a new trunked keying device to replace the CZ-1; the BSG-93 can be used with both systems. The sensitive security module with the key data can be removed from the set, which simplifies confidentiality.

The BSG-93 can be used to remotely control the microwave radio units and monitor the microwave communications network. The BSG-93 is connected to the microwave relay stations with fibre optic cables LWL-1 and can be operated up to 4 km away from the location of the microwave radio transmitter.

Development

Deployment

Procurement of the R-905 was initiated in 1999; a decision was made in 2002 to acquire a second batch, which was delivered in 2004/5.

The R-905 microwave relay unit was also used as a mobile system on the Radio Access Tank (RAPz).
