Technical data

  • Principle]]: Teletypewriter (tape teleprinter)
  • Operation modes: CCITT No.2 / Baudot; 50 Baud, 400 ZpM

Dimensions

The complete Stg-68 teletypewriter fits into two voluminous crates:

  • Crate A: Transport case: 565 x 423 x 415 mm; 44 kg
    • Tape teletypewriter Siemens Stg-68: 23 kg
  • Crate B: Supplementary case: 617 x 682 x 762 mm; 131 kg
    • Mains power supply SG 61: 25 kg
    • Single tone telegraphy unit ETT-60: 19 kg
    • Simultaneous unit 60: 24 kg
  • optional:
    • Universal remote control unit UFG-62: 16.2 kg

The total weight of the system is 175 kg.

Accessories

  • Mains power supply unit SG 61: for power supply from the mains using an isolating transformer, input voltage selectable from 110 - 250 V, the pointer of the measuring instrument must be at the green mark for 220 V.
  • ETT-60: provides the 60 V voltage for the line circuit (from the mains power supply, alternatively via backup accumulators; the ETT-60 converts the single-current pulses of the teleprinter into 1500 Hz tone pulses, which are transmitted directly or via the SIM-60 simultaneous unit to the long-distance line. In receive mode, a bandpass filter selects the 1500 Hz teletypewriter signals (bandpass 1400 - 1600 Hz)
  • Simultaneous unit 60: Connected between ETT-60 and the trunk line, the simultaneous unit 60 allows the simultaneous use of a single connection for telex and voice operation. The call current of 30 Hz from the crank inductor of the field telephone is converted in the call converter into a call signal of 1000 Hz, which can be forwarded via radio connections.
  • Universal telecontrol unit UFG-62: with the UFG-62, a teleprinter can be connected either to the public telex network or to a hand-switched telephone exchange; point-to-point connections between two teleprinters with dedicated lines can also be implemented. In local operation, the teleprinter can be used to check punched tape, etc. without sending it out. - The teleprinter still remains on reception for incoming calls.
  • Telecrypto 61: for automatic encryption of messages sent via the telex connection.
  • Boradcast unit: A message can be sent simultaneously from one teletypewriter to up to six recipients using the broadcast unit.

System material

The teleprinter Siemens & Halske Stg-68 is a tape teletypewriter that can process signals in accordance with CCITT No. 2 / Baudot Code, 50 baud. The teleprinter is equipped with a built-in punched tape transmitter (to the left of the operating mode switch) and a tape punch and has an automatic name generator.

The operating mode switch can be used to operate the teleprinter as a tape punch (position Lochst Perf, without message transmission) or as a teleprinter (position Stg).

The teleprinter Stg-68 works as a tape teleprinter, self-adhesive papaer tapes are printed and glued onto the telegram form. The Stg-68 can work together with the Stg-100 page teleprinter, in which 69 characters fill one line. To give the telegrams a similar format, the Stg-68 uses an end-of-line signal lamp from the 59th character to signal that the line will soon be full and that a new line must be started using the „carriage return“ and „line feed“ buttons.

Power is supplied via the SG 61 mains power supply unit from the 220 V AC mains.

The Simultaneous unit SG-60 allows simultaneous communication by telephone during telegraphy traffic. As the frequency range of 1200 - 1800 Hz (around the telegraphy frequency of 1500 Hz), which is important for speech intelligibility, was filtered out, speech intelligibility was considerably restricted and the telephone connection was only intended as a service connection. In addition, the inductor call of the (field) telephone set was converted to a 50 Hz call signal in the set, which required the call converter to be switched on at both sides in order to function properly.

The Single tone telegraphy unit ETT-60 allowed the use of the teleprinter on improved telephone lines of the public network, for dialling into the public telex network the Universal - Fernschaltgerät UFG-62 had to be used.

Encrypted messages can be sent together with the CCITT encryption device Telecrypto 61. In contrast to the Telecrypto 53 or the KFF-58, which also works with the 14 segment code of the ETK, the Telecrypto 61 can encrypt the 5 bit code according to CCITT No.2 used by the teletypewriters.

Development

The Stg-68 tape teletypewriter was developed by Siemens & Halske, Munich in 1950/51 and became the standard teleprinter used by the German Federal Post Office for telegram services. From 1951/62, the teleprinter was manufactured at Albiswerke, Zurich, with the internal designation T.typ 68.

Use

Initially, the Stg-68 tape teletypewriter was used in the coppand post or the chancellery for punched tape production (alternatively, the Hst-68 hand punch could be used for this), later it replaced the ETK on wired teletype lines, especially for command connections.
